  ARE DANCE RECORDS GROWING LONGER?
(this  is  an  updated  blog  from  Oct. '08).  Many early  Disco 12"
records  were often 12 minutes or longer in length.  They usually had
only one mix and an instrumental B-side.  As radio got on board there
was a need for shorter  tracks.  It seemed 4:40 was probably the most
popular  radio  length.  Today, even a tighter 3:30 can get the point
across at radio.  Over the last several years, Dance releases seem to
be getting  longer again (7:30, 8 and even 9+ minutes). Seven minutes
of a well crafted Dance HIT is like  listening to a musical symphony.
But, seven minutes of a redundant, overdone and contrived  melody can
become nightmarish. Now, it's not unusual for a release to have 11 or
more  different   remixes (although 4 or 5 are  usually  sufficient).
Longer  lengths and numerous  remixes are  here to stay and  becoming
the norm, although a tighter/shorter radio edit can be just as enjoy-
able/profitable and is still capable of winning the gold.////////////

  B-TEAM PRODUCERS REVIVED DANCE MUSIC

(this  is  an  updated  blog  from  Oct. '08).  Old  fashioned  House
music is currently  "where it's at."  Many A-team  producers/DJs  and
artists  were  hit  by  a brick  when  the  B-team (Antoine Clamaran,
Richard Earnshaw, Hott 22, Erick Morillo, Dave Spoon, etc.) took Dance
off of life support in '07.  Now, they have become the A-team and are
scoring and making touchdowns. Gone are the HO-HUM,dime-a-dozen, con-
trived Trance, Techno and Electronica tracks that the old A-team con-
tinued to make (even as others were growing tired of them).  Many are
excited about  Dance music again for the first time since 1994.  Even
without radio, the Dance  train is moving once again. Let radio enjoy
all the souped-up Pop and Hip-Hop  fodder they call Dance (with muff-
led  vocals  thrown atop a weak, watered-down beat they want).  We've
got the real thing and refuse to stop this train and let them get on-
board.  We're on a roll and radio  must  meet us at the station  when
they  become educated and desire to play  GENUINE  Dance  music  once
again. Dance  music was not created by radio and we can have  just as
good a time without as with them (finger snap).//////////////////////

DISCO DIVA DEBBIE JACOBS A REAL PRO
(this is an edited  blog  from the Fall of '08). I first  caught  the
"Debbie" fever  while  spinning  her  HIT "Don't You Want My Love" at
the  University Of Florida's WRUF-FM in Gainesville.  That  was  soon
followed  by her  debut  album "HIGH ON YOUR LOVE" which  gave us two
more  classics, "High On Your  Love"  and  "Hot  Hot (Give It All You
Got)."  After graduating I moved to Hotlanta and discovered  that the
Baltimore  native  was  making a midnight  Sunday  appearance at  the
legendary Backstreet club.  Well, it must have been a cold, rainy, or
good TV night, because the crowd was unexpectedly small.  Debbie per-
formed an array of HITS (as if she was singing to 10,000). Eventually
she joined  all on the dancefloor  for a group  singing of "Don't You
Want My Love."  Needless to say, it was a FUN evening and her ability
to rise above an awkward  situation made a lasting impression.  While
others  would have left or sung only one tune, Debbie not only put on
a great show but was HOT HOT and GAVE IT ALL SHE HAD that evening!///

 RESTRICTING ACCESS HURTS ARTIST SALES
(this is an updated blog from Sept. '08)  If I was an artist I'd want
people to  purchase  and  download  my  music, whether  they  were in
Athens, Greece or Athens, Tennessee. So, what's  up  with  all  those
territory and downloading restrictions? Why build barriers and fences
to lower or diminish sales and popularity?  Restricting downloads can
come back to haunt you.  Hopes of selling rights to another  label in
another country may never materialize. Songs are usually desired when
new and fresh  and not one  year  later. Restricting is a shot in the
foot and should be avoided at all costs. Lower  sales and chart  pos-
itions  are a direct  result of restrictions. Where  would  Pepsi and
Coke be today if they had chosen to restrict all sales in California?
That would have been a business  mistake and they would only be hurt-
ing themselves.  TEAR DOWN THOSE WALLS ALL YOU RESTRICTORS........AND
LET THE DANCE MUSIC PLAY.////////////////////////////////////////////

HOW COMMENTS AND THOUGHTS BECAME BLOGS
(this is an updated blog from March '08)In 1981 I began mailing Dance
and radio charts to clubs, DJs and radio  stations  across the U.S.A.
in a DANCE MARCHES ON fashion. Many were proclaiming the end of Dance
music  at  that  time.  The  mailings  always  featured a comments or
"thoughts" paragraph at the end.  USA-DANCE.COM  premiered on the in-
ternet in 1999 and we soon discovered  that  we were  able to reach a
larger audience because of it. The mailings were gradually discontin-
ued and replaced by the website.  Those "thoughts"  turned into blogs
for anyone to read. Topics are usually written only a couple weeks in
advance at most. From  April to the end of August I recharge my  bat-
teries and recycle/update the better blogs. I like to compare  things
and look at them from a different angle than others.  The same can be
said for the charts.  Other charts tend to follow almost the same ex-
act records.  Perhaps, that's  why  ours  have  become so popular and
stand  out  among the crowd. We follow no-one and are here to promote
Dance  music and nothing else. We're off the beaten  path and like it
that way. You'll find the same ole, same ole elsewhere. For something
new and refreshing you're at the right place.////////////////////////

THE MUSIC SLUMP OF 2008 REVISITED
(this is an updated blog from Spring '08) The music industry was in a
HUGE slump in the Spring of 2008 (and some  might  say going  back as
far as before 2004). Genuine HITS in all genres were slim to none. In
my blog of that time, I stated  that  this  was the perfect "opening"
for Dance music to step it up and reclaim some LOST space. Now is the
time to break down that wall, I proclaimed. ENTER LADY GAGA. Although
I'm not a fan, others  are.  She stepped in  and  put  her "brand" of
Dance  music in everyone's face. If only  others had heeded the call.
Dance seems to be the  only  genre  that  continues to evolve, expand
boundaries (GaGa) and transform.  With other genres as stale as month
old bread, Dance  is truly a breath of fresh  air. IT'S TIME TO BREAK
DOWN THAT WALL GAGA PUT A HOLE IN. How do we do it?  The biggest wall
is at radio. Instead  of  marketing  Dance  product to  a  handful of
"Dance" stations, we need to target the mainstream  and  bombard  RE-
GIONAL RADIO (GaGa style).  That will provide the  momentum to a more
national  audience.  10 stations in California, 5 in New York, plus 5
in Florida  can be the stepping stones to breaking a Dance  record. 7
"Dance" stations can't break a paper bag, but 10 mainstream ones will
make others  take  notice (as in GaGa).  The same old radio blueprint
isn't working for Dance music, and it's time we chart another course.

WKTU "THE MOTHER OF ALL DANCE STATIONS"
(this is an updated blog from Feb. 2008) New York is the home of leg-
endary radio  station WKTU.  It arrived in 1975 as a regular  station
and switched to ALL DISCO in the Summer of 1978.  Known as "Disco 92"
it was not long after the switch  that it became the #1 station. Many
have fond  memories of WKTU during the Studio 54 era.  As Disco began
to decline at radio, the station  morphed  again in 1983 and the plug
was finally  pulled in 1985. It was reborn in 1996 as a Rhythmic/Hip-
Hop  outlet on a different  frequency.  In 2006  they  took more of a
retro direction and became one of the first Rhythmic Adult Contempor-
ary (or oldies Dance/mix) stations.  About a year ago they toned down
the Dance classics and replaced  them  with  more  current  Hip-Hop &
Dance  jams  in an attempt to attract a larger and younger  audience.
Their latest switch seems to have worked for them.  WKTU continues to
be a trail blazer by adjusting and tweaking  their  format with hopes
of eventually returning back to #1.//////////////////////////////////
